MusicThe music industry is one that has always been constantly changing. But one thing has always been certain and that is that music will always be a manner in which artists can express themselves and their opinions through their lyrics. With the emergence of new artists come new beliefs and styles as well as the content of their songs as well. In recent years one concept that has been implemented in songs is religion, artists who are very representative of their religion try to show that in their music. One particular artist that does so is hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco.

Fiasco who was born an African Muslim is extremely prideful of his religion displaying that pride in many of the things he does and in his music. Fiasco does not drink nor does he smoke, as they are both considered Haram (which means unlawful), he says that the laws of Islam play a major role in everything he does. However he does not want to be a “poster child” for the Muslim religion. He admits that although he follows the religion that he is not the perfect or ideal Muslim and doesn’t want the world to view the religion through his actions.
In 2006 Fiasco released his first album “Food & Liquor”, he points out that this album is related back to the concept Halal (which is lawful). The tracks on the album cover multiple topics such as Islam, racism, poverty and terrorism. In his mind the music expresses how being Muslim changed his life and that it adds depth to the music.
There have been numerous songs released by Fiasco that revolves around the Muslim religion. One of which is the song “Muhammad Walks” which was the Muslim artists version of “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West. Another song “American Terrorist” talks about the unfair treatment of others within America and shows the views that some have on Muslims in America.

Muslim artists such as Lupe Fiasco have a tremendous impact of the Muslim religion as it helps shed insights on what the religion is about. Specifically in “Muhammad Walks” Fiasco chooses to only display words rather than actual images as it spreads the words of the prophet. This also relates back to his tradition as in Islamic art as spoken and written words are considered themselves works of art.
Songs such as the ones released by Fiasco again have been a great eye opener to help better understand the Muslim religion for those who actually listen and understand the lyrics. They help spread the truth about the religion, which is often fogged by false beliefs and overgeneralizations. Muslims in other parts of the world also embrace Fiasco’s music specifically for this reason as they see a proper representation of what Muslims believe in.
